A car battery doesn't usually go from perfectly fine to completely dead overnight. In most cases, it weakens gradually, and your car will give you signals that something isn't right.

Sign 1: The Engine Cranks Slowly

This is the most common early warning sign, and the one most people notice first.

When you turn the key, you might hear the starter motor turning over the engine more slowly than usual. It's that low, labored sound instead of the quick snap you're used to. Sometimes the car starts fine anyway. Sometimes it hesitates for a second before catching.

That slow crank is your battery telling you it's struggling to deliver enough current. On a cold morning, this often gets worse because cold temperatures reduce battery capacity.

Sign 2: Electrical Gremlins

Before a battery dies completely, you might notice strange electrical behavior.

If the sides of the battery case look bloated or expanded, that's heat damage. The internal cells have been damaged, gas has built up inside, and the battery is structurally compromised. This is not a battery that's going to recover.

Sign 5: Needing More Than One Jump Start
